Godwin's Law Update   (+3, -2)  [vote for, against]
Obviously needed

Mentioning a certain orange-haired candidate after the election should be considered a fulfillment of Godwin's Law. That's all. [marked-for-expiry].

Presuming she wins -- still the most likely outcome -- Hillary will almost certainly face the same congressional make up, with calls for impeachment over clearly untruthful email testimony starting day one.

She does have an amazing opportunity -- as Obama did in 08. He didn't rise to his, though he faced no meaningful pressure from the left. I'm pretty skeptical she will rise to hers, as she actually faces tremendous pressure from the left. Then again, perhaps she doesn't plan to run again in four years and instead can try and bring us back to sanity.

But no worries, either way the West/Cuban administration will fix all. And if not, there's always the Martian colony.

Ian, there's ample evidence Hillary believes in aliens -- although she prefers to call them undocumented sentients - - and in fact, prior to Trump's ascent, she was also the largest purveyor of conspiracy theories (vast right wing ones).

As to my assertion regarding Hillary's belief -- her campaign chairman is a known UFO enthusiast who supported disclosure petitions -- see his wiki linked here

How in the names of god did you Americans end up with two of the worst imaginable candidates? Have you considered having a third party, with its candidate chosen by throwing a dart into a large crowd?
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Sep 28 2016

//Have you considered having a third party,//

I'm a libertarian. We save time by putting our voting ballots directly into the paper shredder.

I'm thinking that no sane person would want the job. Open to other explanations but that seems most plausible.

Speaking of the libertarian thing, it must be said that our candidate this election is a complete idiot. See comment above.
-- doctorremulac3, Sep 28 2016

My upbringing did not include indulging in party politics, so I'm stuck simply looking at issues. In these discussions I can only play the role of the clueless outsider.

As near as I can tell, there are two kinds of people.

Those who are most comfortable when identifying with a group so that they can look down on other groups.
-- normzone, Sep 28 2016

//Ask someone why they support Hillary, and their answer begins with Trump. Ask why they support Trump, and their answer begins with Hillary.//

Yea, that's pretty much it. Trump's biggest plus is he's not Hillary and Hillary's greatest plus is she's not Trump. Problem is, both Trump and Hillary are themselves respectively.
-- doctorremulac3, Sep 28 2016

I could clear some space in my diary and run. When's the election?
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Sep 28 2016

// two of the worst imaginable candidates

They were the two worst imaginable candidates, except for all the others.

// Hillary will almost certainly face the same congressional make up, with calls for impeachment over clearly untruthful email testimony starting day one.

Trump is at least as likely to be impeached as Clinton, if not more so. In fact I wonder if this is Paul Ryan's plan. Impeaching Trump results in President Pence, with which the GOP congress would be very happy.

But leave the rest of the nation feeling Pen(s)cive...
-- RayfordSteele, Sep 28 2016

I forget who said it first, but "Anyone who can get themselves voted in as president shouldn't have the job" (or "doesn't deserve the job"... I forget).

Wouldn't it be interesting if there was actually some intelligent design behind this? They actually figured out that the only way to get people interested in the process is to have such heinous, despicable people running that it would actually get people to the polls to vote AGAINST them. Sounds like an interesting movie script idea. Unfortunately I don't believe in intelligent design. At least not in politics.

I think the most plausible reason politicians are so horrible is that sane, well balanced individuals don't feel the need to exert power over others. You're either well adjusted or you're an insane megalomaniac. Well adjusted people get satisfaction out of being well adjusted people. For certain people, when it comes to power, there is no such thing as "enough". Power mad psychopaths are always chasing that dragon. If you're addicted to that drug, there's no coming down. You'll do anything to get it.

Why do you think presidents of various countries are always meeting with the world this or that organization? "It's time for all the people of the world to come together on a global scale to DO AS I COMMAND!!!" Luckily world leaders all hate each other so we haven't had to deal with an all powerful single planetary leader.

Yet.
-- doctorremulac3, Sep 28 2016

// Yet //

<muffled sniggering>

“The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them. To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.”

That's why rule by an aggressive hegemonizing swarm of ruthless, emotionless drones will be so much better for you.

Resistance is futile. Freedom is irrellevant, self determination is irrellevant. You will be assimilated. You must comply.

[8th of 7]; thanks, I knew it had to be some-one clever like that.

There's a reason Civil Service union contracts are called "Collective Agreements".
-- FlyingToaster, Sep 28 2016

Yeah, simply sounds like a better-organized union. How entirely socialist...

Nice category :)

//As near as I can tell, there are two kinds of people.

You only seemed to have mentioned one type of person, or am I unusually stupid today.
-- not_morrison_rm, Sep 29 2016

<examines instrumentation displays>

No, readings indicate that as expected you are exactly as stupid as usual. This is reassuring, as we use you as our calibration standard for human stupidity, providing a useful fixed point at the very top of the scale.

Will Orange be the new Black?
-- AusCan531, Sep 29 2016

Given the descriptor, would the name not become Goblin's Law?
-- xenzag, Sep 29 2016

[nmr], I think the structure of the joke drove it over your head perhaps. Try this one on for size as practice: "there are ten kinds of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't."

And orange will never have as much class as black. As a matter of fact, I would sell off my shares of Frozen Concentrated Orange Juice as a commodity if I owned any.
-- RayfordSteele, Sep 29 2016

AusCan, now that was funny, given the current unfunny situation in this whacked country of mine.
-- blissmiss, Sep 29 2016

The usual drivel. Diplomatic solution in Syria, indeed.

The poster child for European liberal fantasies for America has been in power for 8 years, with predictable results, mostly predicted by Romney, as a for instance, and everyone, including the Europeans, are worse off. It's almost enough to consider Trump. But likely not quite enough
-- theircompetitor, Sep 29 2016

Sometimes there just isn't much you can do besides try and ease the pain somehow.

The administration blew it big time and lost the initiative when there was a window. When Congress balked after the "red line," we just weren't taken that seriously anymore. This one issue I do fault Obama for.
-- RayfordSteele, Sep 30 2016

//solution//

Please google "wicked problem".

Many discussions of such problems are couched in terms suggesting that a small number of intelligent (albeit malign) actors are actually in control of such situations.

In their dreams, they might be.
