Docking Kites   (+7)  [vote for, against]
make kites that join togther in the sky

Kite flying is quite an art form but Docking Kites requires a team of people with an extreme level of skill.

The kites themselves consist of a human figure that has been dismantled into the component parts of head, arms, torso and legs. Depending on scale further, details may be added in the form of additional kites for the hair, feet and hands.

The idea is for the flyers to manoeuvre their kites into an airborne position so that they combine together to create a single flying human figure in the sky.

A hooking mechanism that's controlled from the ground enables the kites to dock unto each other. The controllers must then negotiate a constantly changing set of movements as they dance around each other other maintaining the integrity of their sky kite creation.

Advanced teams can generate more than one figure to make choreographed sky dances or aerial combat events.

+ Very beautiful. Maybe can use magnets for the docking/interlocking system.

Certainly very doable, given the precise controllability of modern stunt kites, and how good the top team flyers are. I like [xandram]s magnet suggestion, although just "holding station" (close but not actually touching/connected) might look/work better.

Love this. You are such a creative soul.

Thank you blissy.

This is a great idea but has strings attached.

There's going to be a little ground dance of kite pilots. isn't there.

[wjt] not so much. High quality kite lines are OK with a few wraps, as long as they're not under heaps of tension & not sawing at each other.
(I haven't done any team flying, but plenty of solo stunt & power 2- & 4-line stuff. Most kites are still controllable with 5 or 6 spins.)

Interesting to know, thanks. Maybe these kites need a flexible straw like cover on the strings, so more a tense flight can occur.
