Each year, about 350,000 Americans go into cardiac arrest, but only 5% survive because help comes too late. So wouldn't it be a lot easier if doctors could don their defibrillators and run to the patient? Provided the patient is in an out of reach area for an ambulance, or if they are in an area where medical staff can get to them quicker on foot than by ambulance - such as in a very crowded street. The power for the defibrillator is stored in the backpack, which can store enough power for a few shocks, and is rechargeable. The user wears insulated gloves, which have conductive pads on them - on the flat part of the fist. The user will press their fists against the patients chest and use the defibrillator as it would normally be used. The design of the defibrillator makes it a lot easier and quicker to use than a normal one, as there will be no fumbling with wires, simply using the pads on the gloves, which are already being worn.-- fridge duck, May 16 2005 Portable defibrillator http://www.cbsnews....th/main327320.shtmlThey're sweeping the city! Have you got your gloves with you?-- moomintroll, May 17 2005 And then it hit me :)-- theircompetitor, May 17 2005 Something about the \\The power for the defibrillator is stored in the backpack\\ line makes me instinctively think about Ghostbusters. I obviously had a very cultured upbrining.-- hidden truths, May 17 2005 Cant you just wear one of these all the time, and if your own ticker goes, slap your chest? No need for a backpack, because you can charge the capacitor with piezoelectric shoes. I think theres a pair in the bakery somewhere...-- ldischler, May 17 2005 Don;t touch me with a pair of those on! p_p-- EvilPickels, May 18 2005 Why do the pads need to be in glovular form? Why not simply a compact defib that can be carried on the paramedic's back with conventional pads?
And isn't the surface area of the pad important to the effect of the voltage delivered to the patient? Surely the flat of the fist isn't a large enough area.
Fumbling with wires?!
"I'm so sorry ma'am, but your husband passed away."
" *sob* But why, what happened?"
"... I was fumbling with some wires."-- pooduck, Jun 06 2005 How about "preventative" defibrillation?-- crater, Jun 07 2005 If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Normal defibrillator pads aren't particularly large either. But what part is the flat of the fist? My fist appears to be without any flat.-- hidden truths, Jun 09 2005 I boned this as I didn't think there was a problem here. After a quick google I find out that there is - bone withdrawn. I also find that they are widely baked, except for the gloves (which are as spurious as I suspected) - no bun.-- wagster, Jun 09 2005 random, halfbakery
