During the workday the display is kept updated, powered by a small storage-capacitor charged by a thermo-electric cell. After a few hours of being heat or motion-less, the e-paper pixels revert to a static display until the clock is heated or picked up. The timekeeping portion requires almost no energy at all and can easily keep running for a week or two unassisted.
