In my passive aggressive world, social interaction in coffee shops takes place mostly over the top of the coffee cup as It is raised to my face, purportedly for a sip of coffee but in actuality or just by happy coincidence, to check out the hot number who is sitting across the store. Well I may be passive aggressive but I have noticed that there are a number of other furtive over-the-cup glancers who keep Starbucks in business.
I view this kind of social interaction as less awkward than regular face to face negotiation and also a step toward the mediated, assisted world that our awkwardly texting progenitors will inhabit.
So here is the idea: an extended brim to the coffee cup that is made of darkened transparent plastic. With these coffee cup sunglasses, over-the-cup glances will be privatized.
