I figured there'd be reference to prior art - the actual original version is by Jake Holmes - his rendition was a folkier blues, and as a great many a blues recording - spooky - Jakes lyrics are what the Yardbirds w/Jimmy Page heard and saw (where they were blown away by the performance), then played with changes to the arrangement, but not the lyrics. Incidentally, that Jake Holmes album is fetching more than a few bucks in collector circles. I don't see a further need to get into all the finer points of "I'm Confused" by the Yardbirds.
However...
The substantial change to lyrics came by way of Led Zep. Jake Holmes didn't get the songwriting credit, though - Jimmy Page took it. That said, "kudos to Led Zep" refers to lyrics as performed by Led Zeppelin, not Holmes, not The Yardbirds, and are the lyrics upon which this is based.

OK, all that accepted. Please mentally amend my anno to "Popularised by..." (At least in UK. Blues was pretty much unheard of until the Yardbirds and some of their contemporaries.)
It's also worth noting that much of Zep's early stuff, credited to Page, is blatantly stolen from the old blues masters.

That's absolute truth there - they, perhaps more than any other band of renown, were the most blatant at "covering" songs in more ways than one. They'd cover the author's name with their own.

Muddy Waters and Otis Spann made their first trip to England in 1958, where Muddy's electric guitar horrified hmmmm, sedate Britishers more used to the folksy homilies of Big Bill Broonzy, not Chicago Blues. (Chagrined by the response, Waters paid tribute to Broonzy with a solid LP of Broonzy's tunes the next year.)
But some weren't horrified. Certainly not Alexis Korner or Cyril Davies - 2 "early" British Blues Mentors, from there it stepped up to John Mayall and Graham Bond, then the early leanings of The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, The Animals, The Kinks, Manfred Mann, The Pretty Things, Them, Spencer Davis Group, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Peter Green, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin... all of whom influenced their own listeners.
Were it not for bands such as these, I'd likely not have appreciated Blues like I do now (100+ albums), nor would I have the opportunity to have communicated with the still-living James Cotton (what a thrill) and David Honeyboy Edwards (The last of Robert Johnson's contemporaries).

Too much of Kentucky's finest. For the life of me I can not figure out which Zep song is the match of Dr. Bob's.

I was amazed to find out how much Led Zeppelin borrowed, but like the Stones, would anyone know of the source unless it was popularized? Possibly the original source becomes more popular from the borrowing?
