American Foosball   (+1, -1)  [vote for, against]
play American Football on a table top

American Foosball is similar to the 'traditional' foosball game in that it takes the form of a table top with a glass covering and there are two sets of rods with players attached that can be manipulated to get the ball into the opposing team's net.

The big difference with American Foosball is with the layout. In this version, instead of the rods being at right angles parallel to the pitch area, these rods run front to back. This means that the players face each other along the length of the table with a row of rods terminating in a variety of players that correspond to those of the actual game. The rods are also not anchored at the other end, meaning they are free to be pushed around along the full length of the table, entering it via a series of swivelling ball joints.

The next big difference is in the number of players who can engage with the game. Being a physically larger table means that the 11 men rod teams can each be controlled by up to 3 human operators at either end.

Strategy and choreography therefore now become important, as well as being able to physcially shove against the opposing team's advancing player rods, and block/impede their movements, just as in the full sized version.

Extra toughened glass prevents penetration of any of the rods. The game is best played with a table that straddles an oblong hole cut in a chain link fence partitian so that the actual players cannot attack each other directly. (that's a different version)

De-luxe version features replicas of real teams and a variety of players that must be kitted out in miniature padding etc prior to game commencing.

Will there be blood ? Even fake blood would be a start ...

Ahhhh .... could there be an ice hockey version ? The little figurines would need detachable limbs and heads, though.

Will there be play stoppages every 5 seconds during which foosball cheerleaders entertain the crowd and about half the players are changed for different players from the 'bench'?

It's more than likely, but as the attention span and memory of most players is about 5 seconds anyway, they keep thinking it's a new game starting.

Can it have its own vocabulary that nobody can understand, like "Guys, we're a Murphy down on the fifth, so we're gonna try pulling a one-three-two on Madison and outrun their pastry chef - Hut!"

Spoken like an expert!

I used to holler the fifth-quarter re-runs for the Scranton Paperers. Of course that was before they banned Texas Loops and the game got dull.
