Tethered Plane

Keep the fuel and luggage behind the plane.

Instead of people on a plane sitting above the luggage compartment below, and the fuel filling the wings, why not have a plane composed of two parts.

The main fuselage containing passengers, main wings, and engines, while a separate but tethered tail section contains the luggage and fuel, with its own stabilizing fins. These could tie in to the fly by wire to keep the trailer in sync with the pilots controls.

The advantages are numerous. If stuff explodes (fuel or luggage) the trailer is already behind the plane and wont affect the main part of the plane, so it can land safely.

As well, the trailers could be at airports preloaded with luggage and fuel to expediate incoming and outgoing planes.

Of course the combinations of different trailers for military or civilian use coud add some spice to the mix as well.....

I think we might lose a tad of efficiency in having empty wings, and obviously the tethering bit of this is stupid, it would need to be secure, you don't want a fuel tank flapping around on landing. Comparmentalisation I like though.

Sounds like a train plane; even an endless train plane. The lead plane pulls the gliders down to the landing strip but never lands itself. It circles back to pick up another shuttle group that was launched by maglev propulsion.

mens, what is the advantage of that over simply landing the gliders without a plane?

[david s], I thought later that the lead plane comes up to the airport and there are two small airships with a 'Y' cable going down to the landing strip and maglev pull car. The airships are blowing in the right direction for the oncoming planes is the big safety factor. I may be thinking more of a boiling hot day when the gliders could take hours to land.

Child to Mom: "When's daddy gonna land? They all look like buzzards circling around up there in the sky."

No, you gotta pull them down, it just doesn't look good to the kids.
