Micro-ISP
Design ISP-in-a-box and stop censorship with it | |
I propose a complete, functioning ISP-in-a-box that can be
set up by anyone's grandmother without worrying about it
at all. It would consist of a set of forms for starting an ISP
that would fulfill all the local laws and an agreement to act
as an ISP for another participant and to pay a different
participant to use their internet service. There would also
be an already-set-up CPU the user would be able to plug in
to his or her internet connection and wall socket and
forget.
The agreements would be written such that no actual
money would need to be transferred. Everyone would owe
everyone the same amount.
If enough people did this it would be possible to crowd-
source all internet connectivity by arranging a .org or ten
to run the big pipes and completely bypass residential
restrictions of any kind.
If enough people participated fast enough the government
wouldn't be able to write laws before the whole
infrastructure is in place and it would take a sweep of
every house to stop it.
This would have the effect of completely removing
governmental control over the 'net.

Where would grandma connect her ISP to the internet? Phone lines owned by other ISPs? |

I think it makes sense; police etc. have been given powers to get data from the ISP, in order to spy on an end user. Once the question, "Who is your ISP?" no longer has any meaning, it will be harder for them to do this. |

I think it's vital that this be completely wireless, i.e.
that there should be no physical connections
involved, and that the work done to connect to a
physical network should be via open-source software
and transitional. I see the main problem with the
internet to be the fact that it involves cables, and
we should all be working to eliminate that. |

Have any of you guys tried Freenet? It's kind of
resonant with the concerns raised here, and some of
the implementation is similar as well, and it is of
course pretty much totally anonymous - albeit at
the price
of it being a distinct and separate "web". |
