Light Beam Ceiling Clock

....always tells you the light time

Mount a small laser (or similar) pointing device on a clock mechanism, so that the beam of light acts as an extended hour hand.

Attach the device to the ceiling of a room so that the light beam shines onto the walls a few inches below the ceiling, and over a 12 hour period, the dot of light will do a complete rotation of the room.

Decrotive numbers, Roman Numerals, small symbols etc can be painted on the walls to mark out hours. Only an hour hand would be necesssary, as the distance between each hour on the wall would be enough to indicate roughly the minutes.

The clock device could be designed to fit around (or replace) a ceiling rose, this would put it roughly in the middle of the room, although it would not matter if it was not central, and could also take power from the AC lighting ring.

I like it very much, perhaps by strategically placing things around the perimeter of the ceiling you can also create a rather odd alarm clock (for instance, a disco ball at 7am to wake you up).
P.S. can I have a 24 hour one please ?

also would be useful for providing the markings for hanging pictures very high up the wall.

I think this is an absolutely terrific idea!! [+]

I have a ceiling fan in my bedroom so wiring and installing it on the fan would be a breeze. No pun intended.

just before we all go and bake this, can I suggest one addition: if we all set our clocks so that GMT 00:00 was due North, then if we happened to know the time upon walking into a building, we would also be able to know the building's orientation (making it easier to follow directions). Or something.

P.S. child-of-the-future : "I wonder what direction it is in Tokyo at the moment."

[neilp] reference to the disco ball - with the addition of a stronger laser you would have yourself a Russian Roulette Blinding game!

That's it, now I'm definately building myself a cylindrical room.

You could use a green laser, so you would see a line of light instead, without having to search for the dot

[Worldgineer] How's that cylindrical room coming on?

Searched all the HB expecting this one to be one of [Farmerjohn]'s existing clock ideas..Nope! so nice one [TopTim]

       "What's the time, darling?"

[hip] Um, well... I meant I'm definately resolved to building myself a cylindrical room. Eventually. If I find the time.

I've been looking for something novel that. Something I can see without my glasses on.

Why was this idea not brought to my attention before?

[Max], you've been ignoring the voices again.

You've been a naughty boy, [Max], now get back in the box.
