Big Number Game

Like a lottery but the biggest number wins.

Player each submit a number. Any format is permissable provided it can be read and understood by the organisers and a representative* selection of the players and that it unambigououlsey reffers to one and only one real number.

The numbers are inspected and the largest number wins.

The winner receives all the entrance fee minus a reasonable* deduction for the organisers of the game

The entrance fee is calculated by some method, for example, flat rate, or logarithm of the submitted number, etc.

All but the fee for entry, anyway. [Loris, Feb 14 2023]

       OK, I'll go first: 76

It was never intended to be silly.

The matching of price to number size is part of the game I think.

[hippo] you're not meant to reveal your number until everyone has played.
pocmloc, Jan 06 2020

Oh, sorry. Here's my new number then (obfuscated for secrecy): ##

Hmmm a wily move. I will counter with __
pocmloc, Jan 06 2020

[Chair] I just read that link on big numbers - very interesting

what does 'biggest number" mean? ie most digits or largest value?
xenzag, Jan 06 2020

Neither - it's all about the font size
hippo, Jan 06 2020

       That's a numeral not a number - ha.
xenzag, Jan 06 2020

//how do you set the price up front?// By advertising it to potential players of course. You simply state the formula e.g. "entrance fee in £ is equal to the cube root of the number submitted (to the nearest £0.01)

I suppose the simplest game is just that the entrance fee is equal to the number submitted. Everything else is obfuscation.

How about "Ten to the power of the second-largest number entered" ?
MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 06 2020

//Ten to the power of the second-largest number entered// disqualified, recursive, not a stand-alone definition. Also you have to pay the entry fee based on the size of your submitted number, before the competition is run.

Sounds like a "dollar auction". Possibly baked by the campaign finance system.

       <pokes head into room>

"Ah... numbers, yes. Anyone else feeling a bit migrainey all of a sudden? No? Just me? Alrightythen."

<backs out of room and closes door with nearly inaudible click>

       ^ nice, top notch.
wjt, Jan 08 2020

       Define stand-alone definition.
Voice, Feb 15 2023

[Voice] I can't because not only is it a stupid half-baked idea but the links I added yesterday show it has already been done in a much better way before.

And Thank you [Loris] for the even older version. A fascinating read.
